A Return to Instability in Liberia?

As 2017 elections are now nearing and the UN peacekeeping mission is preparing to pull out, many in Liberia, including some prospective presidential candidates, are hoping to get more, not less, international support. The peacekeeping mission is being drawn down relatively rapidly, and is set to be gone by the time elections happen next year.

But given Liberia’s history of civil war and election violence, the recent toll the Ebola outbreak took on the country, and given who some of the prospective candidates are (including “A repentant warlord, a former international football star and a close associate of convicted war criminal Charles Taylor”), many are hoping for increased international assistance, not a decrease.
