What does it really mean to be free? Freedom of choice? Freedom from oppression? What happens when one person’s choice looks like another person’s oppression? France is struggling with that question, both with Muslim religious attire in public places (not a new debate in France), but also with Islam-inspired fashion and fashion retail. This debate, over what freedom and choice means, has prompted an examination of the roots of France’s core values of “laicite” with more debate sure to come.
