President Xi is taking on arguably his biggest challenge yet, reforming and consolidating the Chinese military. This is a massive political challenge that, if it goes well, could cement him in Chinese history, and if badly, could topple his presidency. It’s such a big push that it’s not just restricted to internal meetings and organizational changes, but also public policies and campaigns related to national security. There is now an education day for national security, media campaigns preaching wariness of potential foreign spies, and of course continued expansions in the South China Sea. Definitely an important issue to keep an eye on.
