The “Not-to-be-named” Minority?

Aung San Suu Kyi, most famously known in the West as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, recently issued some interesting instructions to the new US ambassador to Myanmar: don’t talk about or name the Rohingya people. This is the minority Muslim population in Myanmar that are fleeing the country in record numbers to escape religious persecution. According to the president-in-all-but-name, however, they are simply “not recognized as among the 135 official ethnic groups” and she has requested that the US ambassador play along. To date, he has refused, but this certainly casts increased doubts on the laureate’s human rights record at home for all of Myanmar, not just those wanting her brand of democracy.
