“Youth Bulge”

The term “youth bulge” has been around for a while, and the concept is quite straightforward: because of demographic trends, much of the population in most developing countries is under the age of 30. For some countries, the statistics are even more extreme, for example according to this article, “In Afghanistan, Angola, Chad, East Timor, Niger, Somalia, and Uganda, more than two-thirds of the population is under the age of 25.”

Most of the above-mentioned countries are not particularly stable and do not currently have either the current ability nor any plans in the making to deal with these realities. Given how wide-spread this trend is, countries are already too late to begin planning for this reality, and whether or not they can move forward productively will come down to crisis planning and management.
