It seemed too good to be true: Gambia’s long-time dictator defeated in the polls and then shockingly concedes publicly. In a long string of 2016 stories, no one saw it coming. Except it may have been too good to be true, as Gambia’s now former dictator has changed his mind and is now refusing to accept the election results. He is calling for another election, which we can all assume will have a more predictable outcome. West African leaders are converging on the country to reason with him, including threatening force if necessary.
Why did he change his mind? Possibly because the newly elected president promised to put him on trial within a year. Keep an eye on Gambia, it’s not over yet.
