A British Colony Goes to Court

One of Britain’s last colonial outposts has officially been referred by the UN General Assembly to the International Court of Justice. The Chagos islands (which contains the joint US-UK military base of Diego Garcia) has long been disputed between Mauritius and the UK. Until now, the UK has managed to ignore the issue, but that looks likely to change somewhat as memories of empire fade, and self-determination again rises to the fore.
